Our history

Herenga Muka | Creating Connection was initially formed in 2021, after CRIMSOC was approached by the Department of Corrections as to whether any students at the University of Canterbury would be interested in volunteering at Christchurch Men's prison. Such students would ideally have unique skills and perspectives they could share with the people in the care of Corrections, allowing them to improve relationship skills, improve cultural knowledge and identity and create life long skills


With the Bachelor of Criminal Justice being only a 3 year degree and students coming and going, we saw potential for longevity with the project and thus a partnership with the Department of Corrections was formed.
